GULF OF NAPLES: THE FIRST CROSSING IN 2024 WITH A HYBRID CRAFT

  • Marinvest/SNAV (MSC Group) and Intermarine (IMMSI Group) have signed an agreement for the design and construction of a single-hull hybrid SNAV implementing latest-generation technology
  • The new craft will be the first ferry able to make zero-emission manoeuvres while entering and leaving ports on crossings in the Gulf of Naples

Naples – Sarzana, 16 June 2022 – By the end of the first half of 2024, the first hybrid ferry will go into service in the Gulf of Naples for fast short-haul crossings. Marinvest and SNAV (companies in the MSC Group) have awarded a contract to Intermarine (a subsidiary of the Immsi industrial group - IMS.MI) for the design and construction of a single-hull Hybrid High Speed Craft (HSC), which will update and strengthen short-haul sea crossings in the Gulf of Naples run by SNAV, a subsidiary of Marinvest.

“Protection of the environment is one of the main concerns of the MSC Group, as today’s announcement demonstrates,” said Giuseppe Langella, CEO of SNAV. “We are proud to be able to start operating a state-of-the-art ferry equipped with the most environment-friendly technologies, which will be the first in a series of crafts with equivalent or superior characteristics.”

Designed by the Intermarine research centre in Messina using cutting-edge industrial design technologies, the boat will be fitted with latest-generation engines to reduce atmospheric emissions and a “green mode” electric motor for zero-emission manoeuvres while entering and leaving ports.

This opportunity is marked by close collaboration between Intermarine and Marinvest/SNAV, who for us are not only a client but partners with whom our relationship is underpinned by our companies’ expertise in the naval sector,” commented Intermarine CEO Livio Corghi. This is an exciting project, with a high technology content and focus on the environment, and it was enthusiastically welcomed by our R&D centre in Messina.”

Built entirely in electro-welded aluminium alloy with the Metal-arc Inert Gas (MIG) procedure, the ferry will have a length overall of 58.20 metres and a maximum beam of 11.50 metres, a 750-person capacity (738 passengers and crew of 12) and a top speed of 34 knots.

Vessel characteristics:

  • Type: single-hull [High Speed Craft]
  • Hull: single hull in aluminium alloy
  • Propulsion: hybrid
  • Maximum capacity: 750 people
  • Length: 58.20 metres
  • Beam: 11.50 metres
  • Top speed: 34 knots
  • Delivery: first half of 2024
